My Art Studio

I've just posted some new paintings and drawings on my art website. And here's a peek at my studio in a former industrial building in Washington, DC. In the 1910s it was a pharmaceutical warehouse, later it became a distribustion center for Decca Records, and now it is home to a number of artists working in all sorts of media. Where the magic, procrastination, and mess-making happen:

Some Illustrations

Here are some of my watercolors from a while ago, just thought I'd post them, they are pretty cute: an ode to Spanish art, bird in hand, heavy thoughts, the Golem of Prague, and the Cine Dore in Madrid, Spain..

Winter Birds

These are my holiday cards for 2010: various winter birds. You can print them out, cut them out, and string with ribbon for little paper ornaments. The species include the sparrow, chickadee, Carolina wren, purple finch, cardinal, and more. I wish I had done an owl, though!

Art! Costumes! Sugar Skulls!

nicho I

nicho II

Art! Costumes! Sugar Skulls! What isn't to love about Ofrenda 2009, an art show and Day of the Dead celebration at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA. I have a few pieces in the show ("nichos" and a painting), alongside some great DC-area artists. Am still planning my Halloween costume and working up an appetite for pan de muerto. On the subject of Halloween and All Souls, check out these morbid and funny and cute craft how-tos: Halloween Wunderkammer and Mr. Sock Skeleton.

Here is my Spanish dama costume:

Collage Class

I took a fun collage class at Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring. Here are my little collages inspired by artist Judy Pfaff.

And here are some pieces from a great activity we did with sculptor Richard Serra's verb list. We each picked slips of paper from a box and made a collage according to out chosen verb (drop, spill, dilute, rotate, laminate, fire...) I can't wait to try this with students.
